7th European summit of regions and cities: Invest and connect

8-9 July 2016 in Bratislava

Every two years, the European Committee of the Regions brings politicians from every level of government in Europe – local, regional, national and European – together with experts and stakeholders to the European Summit of Regions and Cities, to discuss policies that affect day-to-day life and business in territories across the European Union. Such a gathering helps to ensure that local experiences are reflected in policies that will affect Europe’s economic, social and territorial prospects for years to come.

The focus of the 2016 Summit, held on 8-9 July in Bratislava, Slovakia, is on the need for investments and for better cross-border connections in order to unlock the growth potential offered by the rich diversity of Europe’s regions. The EU’s investments aim to generate smarter, greener and more sustainable growth across the Union and to narrow the economic gap between the regions of Europe. The EU is now trying to increase the impact of its spending, by simplifying its policies.

The Summit’s themes are given added urgency by continuing wide differences in investment between countries and regions in the EU – and by the European Commission’s efforts to mobilise €315 billion in public and private investment.

On 2 September, together with our colleagues from the Interreg Danube Programme, we will be presenting opportunities and benefits of transnational cooperation for businesses and regional economy.

European cooperation day

21 September 2016 in Europe

European Cooperation Day celebrates the achievements of territorial cooperation in your region. ‘Sharing borders, growing closer’ is the motto for the celebration of this spirit of cooperation throughout Europe and beyond, as territorial cooperation also involves neighbouring countries of the EU.

In the past editions, people cycled together, sang together, ate together, and in general had a wonderful time in each other’s company in hundreds of local events organised by territorial cooperation programmes and projects in over 30 countries.

Project implementation training

21 to 22 September 2016 in Vienna, Austria

The aim of our project implementation training is to provide technical support and advice to beneficiaries, enabling them to reach a higher implementation quality of their funded projects.

The project management teams (project, finance and communication managers) will be informed by the joint secretariat, national contact points and experts from other institutions (e.g. from the European Commission, European Investment Bank, Interact, experienced project lead partners) on and directly practice how to:

  • Measure project progress
  • Communicate their projects
  • Prepare good progress reports
  • Prepare controls and keep audit trails

We aim for active participation in the training, which will significantly increase the learning experience. The event will thus be split into short plenary sessions providing an overview and parallel thematic workshop sessions with a smaller number of participants in each.

European Week of Regions and Cities 2016

11-13 October 2016

The OPEN DAYS has changed name to European Week of Regions and Cities. This is an annual four-day event during which cities and regions showcase their capacity to create growth and jobs, implement European Union cohesion policy, and prove the importance of the local and regional level for good European governance.

The event was created in 2003 when the Committee of the Regions invited Brussels-based local and regional representations to the European Union to open their doors to visitors simultaneously. One year later the European Commission’s DG for Regional Policy also joined the adventure.

Over the years, it has grown into the key event on EU Regional Policy. It welcomes some 6 000 participants in October each year (local, regional, national and European decision-makers and experts) for more than 100 workshops and debates, exhibitions and networking opportunities.
In addition to the Brussels-based workshops, some 250 local events are run from September to November all over Europe.

Registration opens on 6 July 2016.
